The short answer
Hardwood floor refinishing takes a worn floor back to clean wood and finishes it again, so the grain shows and the surface is protected for everyday use. If your oak floors look dull, scratched or faded but the boards themselves are sound, refinishing is usually the first thing to look at. Here is how the process works when our team does it at Davis Flooring.
What happens to the floor
Sanding away the wear
We sand the floor to remove scratches, worn spots and the old finish. We use quality materials and vacuums on every tool, which helps keep dust down in your home while the work is going on.
Careful cut-in work
Along walls, doorways and edges we do careful cut-in work, so the finish looks even across the whole room and not only in the middle of the floor.
Stain or a clear finish
Once the wood is ready, we apply stain or a clear finish, depending on the look you want. Stain and sealer go on evenly, including the edges. Oak can be finished to show its natural grain, or stained for a deeper, richer color, and the sheen can range from a natural look to high sheen.
A final walkthrough
Before we call the job done, we go over the finished floor with you.
Signs it is time to call
- Scratches and scuffs that have gone through the surface finish
- Dull patches along hallways and in front of doors
- A floor that looks flat even after a good cleaning
- Color that has faded or become uneven
If you are not sure whether your floor can be refinished, describe it when you call and we will talk it through with you. If you are adding a room or replacing a floor entirely, see our hardwood flooring installation page.
How to get a quote
